Seat-on-Seat (SoS) Stacking
In SoS stacking, the seat cushion itself supports the stacked chair above it. This is the more refined and design-focused method of stacking. It’s often used in higher-end or more elegant environments.

Pros of Seat-on-Seat Stacking

- Lightweight: SoS chairs often require less metal framing, resulting in a lighter chair. This design can ease handling and reduce fatigue during setup.
Cons of Seat-on-Seat Stacking
- Lower Stack Height: These stacks tend to be less stable, especially when stacked high. The seat cushions compress under weight, which can cause a slight wobble.
- Firmer Cushion Requirements: Because the cushion bears the weight, it needs to be firmer to prevent deformation or sagging.
- Larger Storage Footprint: SoS stacks flare outward as they rise. They take up more room in storage compared to the more vertical FoF stacks.
Frame-on-Frame (FoF) Stacking
In FoF stacking, the chair’s frame, typically the legs or stacking rails, supports the weight of the chairs above. This method is often found in utility-focused or space-constrained venues.

- Design Limitations: The need for specific frame geometry and visible stacking rails can limit aesthetic flexibility. FoF designs can look more utilitarian.
